しかし、ただただ慈しむためにその日があるのではありません。今年も、来年も、その後もずっとずっと「ある一日」はやってくるのですから。昨日の自分と今日の自分がすでに同一ではないように、明日の自分などもはや見知らぬ生命体（・・かもしれない）。それは時も同じ。あらゆる事象はいつだって、誰にとっても初めての瞬間であると思います。

本作品は岐阜県立羽島高等学校吹奏楽部のメンバーのための金管八重奏曲として作曲したものを吹奏楽編成に改めたものです。初演時の時節柄、クリスマスをイメージしていたのでキャロルとしています。

井澗昌樹(Masaki Itani)

大阪教育大学教養学科芸術専攻音楽コース卒業。同大学大学院芸術文化専攻修了。作曲を澤田博、北川文雄の両氏に師事。

主な作品に、バリトン独唱と管弦楽のためのカンタータ「倭建命 流離譚」、トランペット八重奏曲「四季の奏鳴」など。吹奏楽作品に、「火の断章」（2008年度全日本吹奏楽コンクール課題曲）、「Bye Bye Violet」、「愛の祭壇」など。

Christmas is one of those days that come around once a year. I always look forward to seeing the streets gradually being illuminated in vivid colors from late autumn. Accumulating memories that are precious to us is an essential part of how we live our lives. However, this day does not only exist for the sole purpose of giving us something to hold dear. This is because it will always come around again this year, next year, and every year after that. Just as our self today is no longer the same as our self from yesterday, our self tomorrow may be an existence that is totally unfamiliar to us. It is the same with the passage of time. I believe that every event is always the first for everyone experiencing it.

This piece is a concert band adaptation of a brass octet work that was originally composed for the members of the Gifu Prefectural Hashima High School Concert Band. The original piece was given the title of “First Carol” during its premiere as its composition was inspired by Christmas.
