ウイスキーの製造過程において、樽の中で長い年月をかけて熟成される際、ウイスキーが樽の木目を通してわずかに揮発し、最終的に少しだけ減った状態で完成を迎える現象。当然熟成年数が長ければこの量は多く、味も香りも深いものとなり、価格も高価になっていきます。かのウイスキー職人たちはこれを「天使の分け前 - エンジェルズ・シェア」と呼び、至高の1本を作る際の指標のひとつとしてきました。

この現象に触発され、イメージを広げながら制作した本作。冒頭から前半までは、どこからか舞い降りた天使の傍らで、ウイスキーがゆっくりと色や深みを濃くしていく様を、優しいG-dur - ト長調で表現。後半は「オン ザ ロック」で。強い付点やシンコペーションを特徴とした非常に熱量のある音楽が、最後まで止まることなく一気に駆け抜けていきます。

ANGEL'S SHARE - FOR SAXOPHONE QUARTET

During whisky production, while the spirit rests for years inside oak barrels, a small amount gradually evaporates through the wood’s grain. When maturation is complete, the cask holds just a little less than it once did. The longer the aging, the greater this loss becomes―deepening both flavor and aroma and inevitably raising the price. Master distillers affectionately call the evaporated portion “the Angel’s Share,” using it as one indicator in their pursuit of a truly sublime bottle.

This composition was born from that phenomenon. In the opening and first half, a gentle G major portrays whisky slowly gaining color and depth, accompanied by a visiting angel. The second half is “on the rocks”: driven by bold dotted figures and syncopations, the music surges forward with unrelenting energy until the very end.
