マーチ「カタロニアの栄光」

普通の長調・短調とは違う、リディア旋法（またはヒポリディア旋法）やミクソリディア旋法などが使われている。中世と現代、あるいは異国的なものとヨーロッパが直結してしまったようなガウディの不思議な様式に合う旋法と考えて使った。そういう中世的な感覚が良く出るようにと考え、つまり、モティーフの折り重なりや、ひとつの和音の色や、変拍子に聞こえるような不規則リズムの面白さなどが鮮やかに聞こえるように、マーチとしてはやや遅めのテンポが設定してある。

中間部は、倍音の長い保続音の上に乗った装飾音がたくさん付いたユニゾンのメロディー。途中から倍音が重なるように五度の平行（本当はオクターブと五度離れた平行）になったり、二つのメロディーの線に分かれたりする。ここは、民族的なダンスを伴奏するバグパイプの響きである。

MARCH “GLORY OF CATALONIA”

Glory of Catalonia is dedicated to the great Catalonian architectural wizard, Gaudi, who devoted his life to creating buildings that represent a dream country on the earth. This piece is drawn from the original score Mamiya composed for a documentary film about Gaudi’s work.To create a musical pallet representative of Gaudi’s mysterious and wonderful design style, Mamiya employs the lydian and mixolydian modes. The result is music that reflects Gaudi's fantastic blending of the mediaeval and modern with connections to exotica from across Europe.Weaving melodic material is presented over static harmonies in irregular time signatures, all performed at a slow tempo. In the middle section of the work, the composer pays homage to plainsong with the entire ensemble playing a unison melody with many grace notes over a sustained pedal point. The melodic material evolves and is presented in parallel fifths, representative of mediaeval organum. Eventually, this material splits a third time into two part counterpoint, creating music representative of folksongs traditionally performed on Spanish bagpipes.
