カルテット颯の依頼により書き下ろした作品。私にとって初めてのサクソフォン四重奏のための作品でもあります。

ソナタ形式による中庸なテンポの第一楽章、同じくソナタ形式（但し展開部を持たない）によるゆったりしたテンポの第二楽章、ロンド・ソナタ形式による快活なテンポの第三楽章という、古典派の伝統的なスタイルで書いたものです。

ロマン派、近代と時代が進むに連れ、音楽のスタイルも変わっていきますが、新しい感覚で、この古典的なスタイルで書かれたモーリス・ラヴェルのソナチネという作品があります。私自身、この作品が大変好きで、今回の創作でもヒントにしたことも多かったので「ソナチネ」と名付けました。

余談ですが、ヴァイオリンとチェロのデュエットでも「ソナチネ」という作品をすでに書いているので、この作品は「第二番」としました。

今回、作曲の依頼をくださった滝上さんとは、20年以上の付き合いになり、私の作品も何度も演奏していただいていますが、新作を初演していただくのは今回が初めてです。4種類のサクソフォンは、同族楽器でありながら、それぞれの楽器が個性的でもあるように思います。この作品では、それぞれの楽器の魅力を活かすことと、同族楽器ならではの一体的な響きを活かすことを意識しました。

2018年3月に、高山市でレコーディングを行い、2018年7月にクロアチアで開催されたワールドサクソフォンコングレスでのコンサートで世界初演され、2019年6月にCDの発売に合わせ名古屋市のHITOMIホールで日本初演されました。

酒井格(Itaru Sakai)

大阪府生まれ。4歳からピアノを習いはじめ、6歳で最初のピアノ作品を作曲。高校時代、吹奏楽部にてフルートおよびピッコロを担当し、在学中よりアンサンブル、吹奏楽のための作品を作曲。大阪音楽大学作曲学科に進学、同大学院を修了。

国体のファンファーレ、奈良県吹奏楽連盟40周年、50周年、60周年記念の委嘱作品。大阪市音楽団、各自衛隊音楽隊など、プロフェッショナルな吹奏楽団から、アマチュアの市民バンドまで数多くの委嘱を受け新作を発表。第81回（平成21年）以降、選抜高校野球大会では入場行進曲の編曲も行う。

第25 回日本管打・吹奏楽アカデミー賞（作編曲部門）受賞。平成23、26、27、28、30 年度、JBA下谷賞受賞。

21世紀の吹奏楽「響宴」会員。大阪音楽大学非常勤講師。

SONATINE NO.2 FOR SAXOPHONE QUARTET (OP.167)：Composer: Itaru SAKAI

A piece commissioned by Quartet HAYATE. It is also my first piece for a saxophone quartet.

It is written in a classical and traditional style, with the first movement having a moderate tempo in a sonata form, the second movement having a relaxed tempo in the same sonata form (but without development), and the third movement having a lively tempo in rondo and sonata forms.

From romantic music to modern music, as time goes by, music styles change, there is a piece by Maurice Ravel called "Sonatine," which was written in this classical style with a new perspective. I love this piece, and my recent creation was heavily influenced by it, so I named it "Sonatine." This is a digression, but I have already written a piece called 'Sonatine" for a violin and cello duet, so I made this piece "the Second."

I have been acquainted with Mr. Takiue, who commissioned this piece, for more than 20 years, and he has played my pieces several times, but this is the first time for him to perform the debut performance of a new composition.

While belonging to the same family of instruments, I believe that each of the four types of saxophones has its own uniqueness. In this piece, I focused on bringing out the charms of each instrument, as well as emphasizing the united sound unique to a family of instruments.

The recording was carried out in Takayama in March 2018, and the piece had its world premiere in a concert at the World Saxophone Congress held in Croatia in July 2018. In line with the CD release in June 2019, it had its Japan premiere at HITOMI Hall in Nagoya.
