The “Silk Road” was an ancient network of trade routes from Europe to Asia used regularly from 130 BCE to 1453 CE. In Kanji,「彩」 means colour or sometimes variety. [Bugaku ~ Koto no Irodori] is my attempt to musically portray how the Silk Road brought this to the many cities along its vast trek from Occidental to Oriental. With this in mind, I composed this piece imagining what I would have seen if I had travelled the route so long ago. As a trave ller, I leave Japan to see the wonders along the Silk Road. Along the way, I would visit cities filled with people enjoying the riches and bounty brought to them by the traders and the rewards of their hard work. To my Japanese eyes, the mix of peoples from across the globe are like a brilliant painting coloured by all the nationalities brought together by the road. The work falls into three main sections. The first is my musical portrait of the tastes of the authentic Japan. Here, the music is inspired by traditional Japanese harmonies and scales, with melodies one might expect to hear young children song. In the second section, I introduce a more exotic and brilliant musical palate toreflect the multicultural ethnicity of the Silk Road’s foreign countries which I see on my journey. The finale brings the two together. Japanese and foreign music cross and mingle, finally merging into a march that expresses sharing of culture and environment of Japan and foreign countries. My hope is the result communicates my personal wish for world peace and positive relations between all nations of the world.[Bugaku ~ Koto no Irodori] was awarded a prize of SHITAYA Award held by the association of Japanese Band Director’s Association (JBA) in 2003.
