SONGS WITHOUT WORDS - DEDICATED TO THE 3.11:Composer: Hirokazu FUKUSHIMA

I composed this piece on commission from Meiji Elementary School in 2011.

I was asked to write a piece of music on the subject of the Great East Japan earthquake, which happened in March of 2011. As fate would have it, I had visited Ishinomaki, one of the cities most severely impacted by the disaster, in around May of that year. That led me to incorporate my memories of that time in the composition.

A piece of music referred to as a “song without words” would typically be a piano piece or other instrumental piece with a sense of lyricism. However, with this piece, I have written down my own memories as a “song without words” about the powerlessness I felt as I looked upon a place that had been struck by a disaster and tried to answer some of the questions that came to mind. What could I say to the students at the school where I was a guest at an ensemble lesson? Should I try to offer words of consolation or sympathy? Was there anything I could say that would not end up sounding hypocritical?

The piece gets intense along the way, but rather than trying to depict an earthquake, this is a representation of my frustration with things such as my own powerlessness and the government’s sluggishness in responding to the nuclear disaster and other problems. That being said, I wrote the music in such a way that in the end, hope for a brighter future remains.
