10の絵画風小品 第9番 華やかなメヌエット

1880年、エマニュエル・シャブリエは、療養のために滞在していたサンペール海岸のリゾート地で、後に「絵画風小品」と呼ばれることになる作品を作曲した。アルフレッド・コルトーもフランシス・プーランクも、この短い作品について熱狂的に語っている。セザール＝フランクは、1881年の初演の際、聴衆に「何か特別なものを聴いたようだ」と言わしめ、「この音楽は、私たちの時代とクープランやラモーの時代とを結びつけている」と述べた。

そのうちの1曲が、ガブリエル・プティドゥマンジェに捧げられた「華やかなメヌエット」である。シャブリエが前ではなく後ろを向いているのが感じ取れる。
メヌエットが「オーヴェルニュの踊り」に近いとすれば、ト長調のトリオは18世紀を意識している。

これはモーリス・ラヴェルが管絃楽に編曲した同作品を元に、現在オランダの編曲家マルセル・バーズがシンフォニックバンド用に書き下ろしたものである。

In 1880, while on a convalescent holiday at the coastal resort of SaintPair, Emmanuel Chabrier composed what were to be called ‘Pi ces pittoresques’. Both Alfred Cortot and Francis Poulenc discuss these short works enthusiastically. C sar Franck, at their premiere in 1881, remarked that those present had "just heard something exceptional. This music links our own time to that of Couperin and Rameau".

One of the movements is the present ‘Menuet Pompeux’ dedicated to Gabrielle Petitdemange. It shows Chabrier looking backward rather than forward. If the minuet is more like an ‘Auvergnat dance’, the G major trio is a nod to the 18th century. Maurice Ravel orchestrated the ‘Menuet Pompeux’ and now Dutch arranger Marcel Baars transscribed this orchestration for Symphonic Band.
