花柳の舞 ~ 舞妓たちの光と陰

　「花柳」とは、日本の文化の1つと言われている「芸者（色町・花町)」の社会を言います。

　「遊女」や「白拍子」と呼ばれた、歌や踊りで座を盛り上げる芸者が登場したのは平安時代（794年）と言われています。やがて戦乱の世となり白拍子は廃れましたが、再び平和が訪れた江戸時代には、神社・仏閣にお参りする人にお茶やお菓子を振舞う水茶屋(みずぢゃや)で料理を運んでいた娘たちが、いつしか当時流行り始めた歌舞伎を真似て三味線や踊りを披露するようになりました。

　それはまもなく「踊り子」と呼ばれるようになり、この「踊り子」こそが芸者の始まりだと言われています。

　芸者は、華やかな表舞台で活躍する姿が思い出されますが、その反面縦割り社会であったが故、色々ないざこざや問題もよく起きたそうです。そんな部分があるからこそ、あの華やかで華麗な舞が生まれ出るのかも知れません。

　近年では、S.スピルバーグ監督の映画【SAYURI】が公開され、その影響か外国人は日本の芸者に対する見方が変わり、今では「憧れの職業」と考えている人も多いそうです。

　この曲は、そんな芸者たちの「明」と「暗」を私なりに表現してみました。前半部分は不安や戸惑いの気持ちを、そして後半は華麗な舞の部分を表現しています。吹奏楽編成でどこまで「和」が表現出来るか判りませんが、それぞれの舞を表現して頂ければと思います。

Karyu means Geisha or the Society of Geisha, said to be one of the defining elements of Japanese culture. It is believed Geisha first appeared during the Heian Era around 794. During the warring period, they disappeared but the tradition returned with the peace that followed in Edo era. Initially, young women who served food and drink to visitors at temples and shrines began to entertain them with dancing. This “Odoriko” or “dancing girls” became the origin of the Geisha.
Although the Geisha may seem to the observer to only be beautiful girls dancing, it actually is a rich and complex world of very strict rules and hierarchies, filled with conflict. Steven Spielberg’s film “Sayuri” examined t his world, shedding light on the intrigue and mysteries of the ancient tradition for the outsiders, especially those in the West.
This piece, composed for Wind Band, employs the geisha concepts of “light” and “shadow” to portray the experience of a Geisha girl in two major sections. The first expresses feelings of anxiety and puzzlement the young girl might first experience as an inductee into the society and the second, her gorgeous dancing once she has mastered her art. Throughout, a strong sense of “Japanese” permeates the score. Performers should strive to bring this to the fore.
