吹奏楽のための幻想曲「壁画」

　インドのアジャンター石窟や中国の敦煌莫高窟など、アジアに広く点在する多くの仏教遺跡は私を魅了して止まないが、それらの造営に携わった往時の人々の情念に思いを馳せる時、私は計り知れない人間のエネルギーをいつも感じる。吹奏楽のための幻想曲「壁画」は、ある特定の遺跡の壁画を描写しようとしたのではなく、圧倒するような、強烈な存在感を放つ巨大壁画を目の当たりにした時の衝撃を描こうとした作品である。

　1989年、秋田県立花輪高等学校吹奏楽部の全日本吹奏楽コンクールの自由曲として作曲。2015年に同校吹奏楽部が再びコンクールの自由曲としてこの作品を取り上げることになり、全面的に改訂。ネクサス音楽出版からの出版を機に、2017年に更に改訂を加えた。

　演奏についてはエネルギーの表出を軸とした堂々としたパフォーマンスを期待するが、力まずに、音色のブレンドや対比を表現することにも留意してほしい。

This piece was inspired by the composer’s travels across Asia to see Buddhist relics such as in the Ajanta caves in India and Dunjuang Magao caves in China. The great murals in these caves stirred emotions in him, inspired by the energy and efforts of immeasurable human beings over millennia. The result is this musical fantasia of an ancient fresco.
In 1989, the original version of the piece was chosen as the f ree piece by the Akita Hanawa High School Brass Band at the All Japan Symphonic Wind Band competition. In 2015, the same school asked the composer to revise the original score for another performance at the same competition.
For this Nexuss edition, the composer added further revisions in 2017. Careful attention to blend and timbre across the band will result in a performance befitting the dignity and elegance of the composer’s intent.
